Through experimenting with the taste, here is a must use recipe for using Tempeh as a substitute for the easy to buy non-meat Breakfast Strips. [Disclaimer: while traveling those Breakfast Strips sure come in handy. ] Once you taste the Tempeh “Bacon” you will immediately note the difference in taste and texture. It is thick, robust and bursting with flavor! I have use the Tempeh has part of a meal or on a sandwich.
It’s easy and a one pan affair with minimal time, ingredients and prep involved! Here are the ingredients for my recipe –
- Tempeh
- water
- Tamari
- Sesame Oil/Vegetable Broth
- Cracked Peppercorns
Using a case iron skillet I simmer the Tempeh in water for about 10-15 minutes. When cool I cut the Tempeh into long strips. I use the skillet minus the water and add the Tempeh strips, Sesame Oil/Vegetable Broth and a couple dashes of Tamari – enough to lightly coat the Tempeh strips. (Both the Sesame Oil/Vegetable Broth and Tamari are used lightly and added after the Tempeh strips are in the skillet.) . Turn the Tempeh strips to coat both sides, add the Cracked Peppercorns and cook on a medium low heat until the Tempeh is firm.
